A brief history of women's Jiu-Jitsu

While the roots of martial arts stretch back millennia, the presence of women in BJJ was relatively sparse until recent decades.


The early 20th century saw glimpses of women engaging in self-defense through martial arts, albeit in a limited capacity. In the 1930s and 1940s, a few women appeared in self-defense videos, showcasing techniques that would later influence the evolution of BJJ. However, these endeavors did not pave a clear path for women to pursue BJJ as a career or competitive sport.


The turning point for women in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came in 1970 - when BJJ gained recognition as a competitive sport. However, it wasn't until 15 years later, in 1985, that Yvone Duarte emerged as a trailblazer, becoming the first female competitor in BJJ. Her entry into the arena marked the beginning of a new era, challenging the notion that BJJ was exclusively a male-dominated domain.


Yvone Duarte's journey didn't end with breaking barriers; it extended to shattering glass ceilings. In 1990, she achieved another milestone by becoming the first woman to be awarded a black belt in BJJ. Her tireless efforts bore fruit in 1985 when the first-ever female division was inaugurated, laying the foundation for women to compete on equal footing with their male counterparts.
